Carrie Brown to Oversee Park’s Extensive Arts and Culture Program

SAN ANTONIO (April 10, 2017) – The San Antonio River Authority (SARA) has hired Carrie Brown to serve as the full-time public art curator for San Pedro Creek Culture Park. Now under construction, the revitalized San Pedro Creek will have a significant arts and culture component including permanent art features, an ongoing series of rotating artworks as well as audio, visual and performing art.

As the public art curator, Brown will be responsible for overseeing the public art program, working with artists to produce successful exhibitions along the creek and developing engaging community art programs. She will also work closely with the San Antonio River Foundation to support fundraising efforts for the public art program.

“Public art along San Pedro Creek will expand the visitor experience and will provide additional opportunities to highlight art though its many forms in a beautiful outdoor setting,” said Suzanne Scott, general manager of the San Antonio River Authority. “Carrie understands the essential role that public art plays in this project and brings a tremendous amount of passion to what she does. We are honored to have someone with her caliber of experience join our team.”

Phase 1 Construction Begins on San Pedro Creek Improvements Project

Bexar County and SARA to Hold Public Meeting Dec. 15 to Share Schedule and Traffic Impact

SAN ANTONIO (December 12, 2016) – Construction on Phase 1 of the San Pedro Creek Improvements Project (Project) is set to begin December 14, and Bexar County and the San Antonio River Authority will host a community meeting on Thursday, Dec. 15 to share the construction schedule and traffic impact, and overall project details and timeline. The meeting will take place from        11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Christopher Columbus Italian Society, 201 Piazza Italia. Members of the project construction team will be on hand to respond to community questions.

Construction on the San Pedro Creek Improvements project will begin with drilling to relocate telecommunication lines from existing downtown bridges to underneath the creek bed, requiring some lane and street closures in the downtown area. Beginning December 14, Houston Street from Laredo to Flores Streets will be closed. Additionally, the two north lanes of Commerce Street from Laredo to Flores Streets will be closed. This utility work must be complete before the demolition and renovations of the Houston Street and Commerce Street bridges can begin.  Full construction on San Pedro Creek will begin in early January 2017.

“On the heels of an amazing community groundbreaking celebration, the complex construction work of bringing this transformative project to the residents of Bexar County begins,” said County Judge Nelson Wolff. “This is a project that Bexar County is extremely proud of, and one that will enhance quality of life, economic growth and cultural vibrancy to the western part of downtown.”

The start of San Pedro Creek’s Phase 1 is located at the tunnel inlet at Santa Rosa Street and   IH-35 south, adjacent to Fox Tech High School and continues to Cesar Chavez Boulevard.

“Our team is committed to completing work on San Pedro Creek with as few disruptions to downtown traffic, businesses and pedestrians as possible. This is a complex project and some lane and street closures are necessary to complete the project,” said Suzanne Scott, San Antonio River Authority General Manager. “We have established an extensive communications program to share construction updates and traffic impacts with the community through a variety of channels, including our San Pedro Creek website, a weekly construction update email blast, social media channels and our San Pedro Creek app. We are also encouraging the community to reach out to us with any questions or concerns through a project information hotline.”

Call For Artists For San Pedro Creek Tricentennial Art Installation

Informational Meeting Set for July 22, 2016. Deadline for Entries is August 12, 2016.

SAN ANTONIO (July 8, 2016) — Bexar County announced today that it has engaged the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) to assist the county with the process of selecting an artist whose work will be the signature public art project of the joint Tricentennial Celebration of Bexar County and the City of San Antonio during the commemorative week, May 1 through 6, 2018. The county has set a budget of $735,000 for the art installation and the application deadline has been set for August 12, 2016.

The permanent art installation will be the centerpiece of San Pedro Creek Plaza, the entryway of a major public works project: the restoration and improvement of historic San Pedro Creek, and development of San Pedro Creek Culture Park in downtown San Antonio. The final installation will be revealed at the grand opening celebration of Phase 1 of the project on May 5, 2018, as part of the official Tricentennial Celebration events organized by the county concurrently with the city and the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

The goal is to convey the compelling fundamental elements of the story of San Pedro Creek as well as the culture and values of Bexar County and San Antonio to current and future generations. “This piece of art must create a lasting reflection of our culture and community,” said Bexar County Precinct 2 Commissioner Paul Elizondo, adding that Bexar County and SARA have defined a process and plan for public art along the creek. “The result of this will be something I hope the community will be proud of.”

The plaza is situated near the historic origin of Bexar County and the City of San Antonio – the first location of Mission San Antonio de Valero, the first Spanish Colonial Mission established in the area (which became known as “The Alamo” after it was moved to the banks of the San Antonio River). The site offers the opportunity to create a landmark that will dramatically transform the Westside of downtown San Antonio. In addition, it will serve as a lasting commemoration of the rich, interweaving cultures that are evident throughout the community and which qualified the five San Antonio Missions to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Features of the artwork should engage the viewer to thoughtfully commemorate and appreciate the 300th anniversary of human events that compelled the integration and fusion of diverse cultures, languages and traditions of the people who inhabited the land and those who arrived to introduce new ways which historically evolved into a major modern community with a bright future. The imagery of the work should address the diversity, inclusivity, traditions that give direction to the future of Bexar County and San Antonio.

Bexar County’s art installation budget includes all artist design fees; artist travel; artist models and renderings of artworks; the fabrication, transportation, and installation of artwork; required insurance; signage for the artwork; and documentation of the final art installation. Additionally, a stipend of $5,000 will be provided by the county to each of three finalists during the competitive selection process.

An informational meeting for prospective applicants will be held at 10 a.m. Central Time on July 22, 2016, at the Christopher Columbus Italian Society located at 201 Piazza Italia, San Antonio, Texas 78207. If unable to attend in person, please contact Bridget Hinze for video conferencing information.

Bexar County and SARA will administer a competitive selection process among interested artists that includes stakeholder reviews, with final approval by Bexar County Commissioners Court. Artists are invited to submit qualifications via the online application by visiting http://spcproject cialis overnight.org/spctricentennialartwork. For more information about the open call for artists, please contact Bridget Hinze with SARA at (210) 302-3257 or [email protected].

Schjetnan is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), member of the Academy of Arts of Mexico, and recipient of the 2015 Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award from the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), the highest recognition of Landscape Architecture.

He has also participated in worldwide seminars and conferences, has been published in professional magazines and authored numerous books.

“As we near the completion of the final design, the addition of Mario Schjetnan and GDU to the design team will provide an opportunity to enrich the landscape design for this unique cultural park,” stated Suzanne Scott, SARA’s General Manager. SARA serves as the project manager of the San Pedro Creek Project. “His previous work on similar projects will bring valuable insight to the team to enhance the user experience, integration with future development and the landscape planting palette.”

The scope of GDU’s work will be further defined during Schjetnan’s visit to San Antonio to tour San Pedro Video Creek and view the current designs in mid-October. While in San Antonio, Muñoz & Company, who serves as the lead architect on the project, will host Schjetnan to share the goals and objectives of the project and the current design documents, with a focus on working to finalize a design that will make San Pedro Creek a park celebrating the heritage and culture of San Antonio.

“The Commissioners Court has been very impressed with the project designs presented by Muñoz & Company, particularly the color, patterns and textures reflecting our city’s Hispanic roots and traditions,” stated David Smith, Bexar County Manager. “As a landscape architect who has worked on numerous urban parks, Schjetnan’s consultation will only enhance these design concepts.”

While visiting San Antonio, Schjetnan will also meet with County Judge Nelson W. Wolff, Commissioner Paul Elizondo, and Councilman Roberto Treviño as well as members of the San Pedro Creek subcommittee and business and property owners along the creek.

“It is a true honor and pleasure to participate with Bexar County and the San Antonio River Authority in the exciting San Pedro Creek Project. I look forward to bringing my experience and talent to the team,” stated Schjetnan. “I have continually visited San Antonio since 1968, during the opening of the World’s Fair and more recently, as lecturer at the San Antonio Museum of Art.”

The caliber of the design team chosen, alongside Schjetnan’s guidance, matches the task of transforming San Pedro Creek into a unique cultural park. “GDU is a welcome addition to our team composed of designers, storytellers and historians,” says Henry Muñoz III, CEO of Muñoz & Company. “We want to be sure that our landscape design best represents the distinctive character of San Antonio’s Mexican and Mexican-American influenced environment in the creation of what will be a linear park like nowhere else in the world.”

Steven Land Tillotson, design principal with Muñoz & Company, commented that GDU’s main focus will be on the creek designs north of Houston Street where the creek is to be a more natural landscape and where private development plans along the banks are underway. “This is where redevelopment plans have rapidly emerged in response to the project and the opportunity for a more integrated design is vital, not just for the landowners, but ultimately for San Antonians who will be living and working in a new urban community.”

San Pedro Creek Design Earns Architectural Recognition

SAN ANTONIO — The American Institute of Architects (AIA) San Antonio honored Muñoz & Company last week with the Unbuilt Merit Award for the San Pedro Creek Feasibility Study. Bexar County and the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) contracted with Muñoz & Company to undertake the San Pedro Creek Feasibility Study in attempt to reconnect people and water, protect life and property, and celebrate culture and history.

“We assembled a top notch team to reimagine San Pedro Creek and we are very proud of their work,” recognized County Judge Nelson Wolff. “San Pedro Creek is the birthplace of San Antonio and the physical state of the creek should resemble its historical and cultural significance to our community. I think Muñoz & Company did an incredible job of that.”

In May 2013, the San Pedro Creek Feasibility Study was completed and the Bexar County Commissioners Court allocated $125 million toward the completion of the San Pedro Creek Improvements Project. The study explored opportunities for containing the 100-year floodplain, restoring and improving water quality and the creek’s natural functions, reconnecting people to the community’s storied and historic natural resource, and catalyzing further economic development in San Antonio.

“Under this design, the birthplace of San Antonio is receiving the respect and the veneration that it has not received in our city’s modern development. The team did a good job of making sure that urbanization is not at the expense of culture; it is a design that exemplifies cultural urbanism. By and large the design lends itself to all facets of this project – creating a people place, encouraging economic development and providing protection from flooding,” said Precinct 2 Commissioner Paul Elizondo.

“The feasibility study created by Muñoz & Company now serves as the inspiration for the ongoing design phase where these concepts are becoming further defined with the input of stakeholders from throughout the community,” said Suzanne Scott, SARA General Manager. Bexar County and SARA will seek further public input on the designs presented in the feasibility study on December 6 at a public workshop. The workshop will be held at St. Henry’s Catholic Church Hall from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Scott invites all residents to participate in the workshop to provide feedback on the developing designs to ensure that the redevelopment of San Pedro Creek meets the hopes and desires of the community.

“This is an important recognition of the historic collaboration of Bexar County, the San Antonio River Authority and Muñoz & Company. We truly believe that as this design becomes a reality, San Pedro Creek as a community park and an important urban space will be a national model of cultural creativity and urban planning that reflects the shifting demographics of the United States in the 21st Century,” said Henry R. Muñoz III, CEO of Muñoz & Company.

To view the feasibility report in detail and to follow the development of the design for the San Pedro Creek Improvements Project, please visit www.spcproject.org. For more information on the public workshop, please contact Bridget Hinze at (210) 302-3257 or [email protected].
