Important as a larval host to pollinators like butterflies, this deciduous tree is a member of the hickory family. Their delicious, buttery nuts (actually a fruit) were eaten and traded by indigenous people living near the creek. The Spanish explorers first came in contact with them in the 16th century, and called them nuez de la arruga, which means “wrinkle nuts.” The Pecan tree is the State Tree of Texas.
