Phase 1 Construction Begins on San Pedro Creek Improvements Project

Bexar County and SARA to Hold Public Meeting Dec. 15 to Share Schedule and Traffic Impact

SAN ANTONIO (December 12, 2016) – Construction on Phase 1 of the San Pedro Creek Improvements Project (Project) is set to begin December 14, and Bexar County and the San Antonio River Authority will host a community meeting on Thursday, Dec. 15 to share the construction schedule and traffic impact, and overall project details and timeline. The meeting will take place from        11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Christopher Columbus Italian Society, 201 Piazza Italia. Members of the project construction team will be on hand to respond to community questions.

Construction on the San Pedro Creek Improvements project will begin with drilling to relocate telecommunication lines from existing downtown bridges to underneath the creek bed, requiring some lane and street closures in the downtown area. Beginning December 14, Houston Street from Laredo to Flores Streets will be closed. Additionally, the two north lanes of Commerce Street from Laredo to Flores Streets will be closed. This utility work must be complete before the demolition and renovations of the Houston Street and Commerce Street bridges can begin.  Full construction on San Pedro Creek will begin in early January 2017.

“On the heels of an amazing community groundbreaking celebration, the complex construction work of bringing this transformative project to the residents of Bexar County begins,” said County Judge Nelson Wolff. “This is a project that Bexar County is extremely proud of, and one that will enhance quality of life, economic growth and cultural vibrancy to the western part of downtown.”

The start of San Pedro Creek’s Phase 1 is located at the tunnel inlet at Santa Rosa Street and   IH-35 south, adjacent to Fox Tech High School and continues to Cesar Chavez Boulevard.

“Our team is committed to completing work on San Pedro Creek with as few disruptions to downtown traffic, businesses and pedestrians as possible. This is a complex project and some lane and street closures are necessary to complete the project,” said Suzanne Scott, San Antonio River Authority General Manager. “We have established an extensive communications program to share construction updates and traffic impacts with the community through a variety of channels, including our San Pedro Creek website, a weekly construction update email blast, social media channels and our San Pedro Creek app. We are also encouraging the community to reach out to us with any questions or concerns through a project information hotline.”
