THREE FLOOD GATES ALONG SAN PEDRO CREEK began operation as part of the Culture Park project. During normal conditions, each of the crest gates—as they are called—stands fully upright, forming a level pool of water on the upstream side. Water flows over the top of the gates, creating an appealing waterfall with the beneficial effect of aerating the water to improve its quality.
During heavy rainfall, the gates are lowered into depressed pockets level with the creek base, and damaging floodwaters flow safely away from the central city. Level sensors located upstream and downstream from the gates transmit information to control panels that automatically adjust the gates’ positioning.
This gate at Nueva Street impounds 1.23 acre-feet (400,797 gallons).

TRES COMPUERTAS A LO LARGO DEL ARROYO SAN PEDRO comenzaron a funcionar como parte del proyecto del Parque Cultural. En condiciones normales, cada una de las compuertas de cresta—como se les denomina—se mantiene completamente levantada, formando un estanque de agua nivelada río arriba. El agua fluye por encima de las compuertas, creando una atractiva cascada con el efecto beneficioso de airear el agua para mejorar su calidad.
Durante lluvias intensas, las compuertas se bajan a las cavidades a desnivel en la base del arroyo, y las aguas de inundación perjudiciales fluyen de manera segura lejos del centro de la ciudad. Sensores de nivel ubicados río arriba y río abajo de las compuertas transmiten información a los paneles de control, que ajustan automáticamente su posicionamiento.
