Locations: Between Travis Street and Houston StreetAbout the Artist: Rubio grew up in the Westside of San Antonio. As a community arts organizer, Rubio has served as a mentor with several community-based, non-profit art organizations and public art programs. In 2011, Rubio founded R Space, a gallery for undiscovered artists in San Antonio and, in 2016, Rubio founded Rubio Gallery-South, a contemporary art gallery presenting early career artists. Rubio’s artworks have been exhibited throughout the United States. He has attained national recognition with grants from the Joan Michel Foundation and Artpace Foundation.

The curvilinear line quality of this mural reflects the ever-flowing waters of San Pedro Creek that have provided sustenance to the San Antonio community for centuries. Using his signature aesthetic of dynamic brush strokes, brilliant hues, and high contrast, Rubio provides a visual parallel to the energetic, soulful history of his subject. Informed by his extensive community outreach, his artwork projects an intimate, yet panoramic view of San Antonio’s many Latino communities.
